What Is Physio-Led Strength and Conditioning?

By Damian Cocciolone

Category: Strength & Conditioning | Reading time: ~5 min

The term “strength and conditioning” gets used loosely — by gyms, personal trainers, and physios alike. Physio-led S&C is a specific model: exercise programming delivered by clinicians who understand injury, load management, and how the body responds under stress. It’s not just coaching with a physio present. It’s a fundamentally different approach to how programmes are built and monitored.

What Makes It Different from Personal Training

Physio-Led S&C vs Personal Training

PHYSIO-LED S&C
✓ Programme built from objective test data
✓ Clinician understands injury & load risk
✓ VALD strength & power baseline
✓ Regular retesting drives updates
✓ Integrated with rehab if needed
✓ Periodised for your sport & history

PERSONAL TRAINING
— Programme based on goals & preference
— Coaching-focused, not clinical
— No objective strength baseline
— Progress tracked by feel or appearance
— Injury management referred elsewhere
— Load decisions largely subjective

What the Testing Involves

At Movement Rx, every S&C programme starts with a VALD Performance assessment:

  • ForceDecks — dual force plates measuring lower limb power, asymmetry, and reactive strength
  • Dynamo — handheld dynamometry for isometric strength testing of quads, hamstrings, hip abductors, and upper limb
  • NordBord — eccentric hamstring strength, a key metric for injury risk and athletic performance

From there, a periodised programme is built around your actual capacity — not what we assume your capacity is.

Who Is It For?

Physio-led S&C isn’t just for people in rehab. It suits:

  • Athletes in-season or off-season wanting structured, monitored strength work
  • Post-injury patients transitioning out of rehab into full training
  • Active adults who keep getting hurt with conventional gym training
  • Older athletes wanting to maintain power, muscle mass, and joint health long-term
  • Anyone who wants to train hard with clinical oversight

Why Objective Testing Changes Everything

Most gym programmes are written from generic templates adjusted by feel. The problem is that two people who look the same and have similar goals can have wildly different strength profiles, asymmetries, and injury histories. Without testing, those differences are invisible — and that’s when load errors happen.

We retest every 4–8 weeks. Programmes update based on data. Progress is visible, not assumed.

S&C at Movement Rx

Our S&C service runs out of our Kippa-Ring clinic and is accessible to patients across the Redcliffe Peninsula, North Lakes, and Moreton Bay. It integrates directly with our sports physiotherapy and return to sport services — so if something flares during your programme, we manage it on the spot.
